Covid 19 - Lockdown and Unlocking

Two short reflections I wrote in response to Covid 19 and 'lockdown', the first written in the early days of the lockdown in England the second as restrictions began to be relaxed. This has been a challenging time for people in lots of different ways and I know it will take me some time to process. I have tried to hold onto hope and have a longing that we might learn and gain fresh insights from this experience. Let us paint a new normal...

Covid 19 Lockdown

Lockdown and Unlocking

Entrapped, constrained, limited

For a greater good - limited

Where have I encountered that before?

God of the universe, incarnate limited by humanity

Bringing freedom like no other

God chooses to be limited that we might be free

But me?

I don’t choose this

I don’t want this

I want to be free!

Free to meet, to sing, dance and play

Free to work, to listen and to talk.

Free to encounter, to bump into new truths and fresh experiences

I want to be unlocked, liberated

Yet I am free…

Free in spirit and soul

Free to be

Safe in earthly comfort - in my life secure

Yet to be fully free needs outward expression as well as inner knowledge

I wait… I await the great unlocking.

Unlock to doors

Unlock

Release

Reduce

Return

Restrictions relaxed

Relations restored (at a distance)

Together – yet parted

No longer a screen between but a metre or two

To be…

To be together, but not

Normal? What’s that?

Will slow become fast?

Will far become near?

What new world is awaiting on the other side?

What might we have learnt?

What might we have gained?

In creation new abundance,

New fruit to bear?

What has been unlocked within us?

What new life is there?
