Connected by a Thread
It has been many years since I first stepped foot onto Iona. I think I was 15 at the time. For me then, nowhere was particularly special; I encountered God wherever I was. And yet, as I put my foot onto the jetty, something changed. It wasn't just the physical beauty of the place, but the community and the environment that was created that helped form such a powerful experience both those many years ago and over the many years since. It's been about 11 years since I last managed to visit the island, but the Iona Community has continued to help me to connect deeply with God. The community has been a way of connecting and of holding me—especially of holding me in recent years when life and faith have been challenging. During that time, I have felt held by others, both in their prayers and in their commitment to living out a life of faith. A life not disconnected from the world but deeply connected to it.
